Obituary for George R Young

George R  Young
George R. Young, 89, a longtime Auburn resident, died Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the home of his daughter Kathryn in Ashland, New Hampshire.

He leaves his wife of 67 years, Sarah E. “Sally” (Moriarty) Young, of Auburn; his children, David J. and his wife Michele, of Littleton, Colo.; Kathryn Y. Lucente and her husband Dominic, of Ashland, NH; Daniel T. and his wife Marybeth, of Auburn; Sara E. Donaruma and her husband John, of Hampden, Mass.; John T. and his wife Dianne, of Holden; and Timothy A. and his wife Gail, of Shrewsbury; he is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Maura E. Young, who died in 1986, a daughter-in-law Karen M. (Vayo) Young in 2010, a brother John N. Young, and a sister Annie Bastien.

George was born in Southbridge, the son of the late John A. and Sylvia (Bernard) Young. He graduated from Mary E. Wells High School in Southbridge and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a Sergeant in the South Pacific during WWII. As a tail gunner in Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 341, George was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Gold Stars and the Air Medal with nine Gold Stars for combat action in the Philippine Islands, January–June 1945.

He retired in 1984 as a General Line Foreman after a dedicated 38-year career in the construction department of New England Telephone and Telegraph.
After retiring, George and Sally moved to Hyannis where he enjoyed staying active, playing golf and earning his pilot’s license. He also enjoyed winters in Florida.

A friend of Bill W., George was very active in local Worcester area AA throughout the 1970s and 80s prior to his move to Cape Cod. He continued his AA involvement and helping others in recovery for the remainder of his life.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with George’s family on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. His funeral will be on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 with a funeral Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. in Saint Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford St. North, Auburn.
