Obituary for John A. Zona

John A. Zona, 96, lifelong resident of Shrewsbury, died Sunday, June 21, 2015 after an illness surrounded by his loving family.

His beloved wife of 66 years, Florence M. (Seaver) Zona died in 2012.He is survived by four grandchildren; John, Matthew, Keeley, and Dillon; two brothers, Victor and Ralph Zona of Shrewsbury; daughter in law, Karen Zona of Shrewsbury several nieces, nephews, the McInerney Family and many wonderful friends.

Besides his wife he was predeceased by two sons, John A. “Jack” Zona, Robert F.”Bobby” Zona; daughter in law, Mary (McInerney) Zona; a brother, Joseph Zona and a sister, Helen J. Grampietro

John was born and raised in Shrewsbury, son of the late Vito and Antoinette (Viscardi) Zona. He graduated from Major Beal High School in 1939 were he excelled in football and baseball.

Mr. Zona worked for over 35 years as a machine operator for Norton Company before retiring.

He was a lifelong member of Saint Anne’s Church; a member of the Shrewsbury Friends Group at the Shrewsbury Senior Center; member of the former Lakeman Lodge and was a member of the WPA Rowing Crew. When his boys were youngsters he coached Shrewsbury Little League and was a devote Boston sports fan. Family and friends were everything to John; he enjoyed his Tuesday morning coffee club and Sunday was “Family Day”.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 10:00 AM in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Anne’s Church Human Services, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA 01545, or to the Zona Children’s Fund, c/o Shrewsbury Credit Union, 615 Main Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01501.
