Condolence From: Bob Lancey
Condolence: I am so sorry to hear that Mr. Dumphy passed away. He was the best and most influential teacher I had at Shrewsbury High nearly 45 years ago. More than any teacher I have had I remember him as not only really caring about the kids but also loving his work. When I heard of his passing, my first memory was in remembering him was a smiling face. He went through life with such joy, and it rubbed off on many of us. He was hands-down the best high school teacher I ever had. He was so loved and appreciated by the class of 73.

Condolence: Think back, if you can, to 1957-58. I was in Mr. Dumphy’s 6th grade class at North Shore School. I will always remember his fun, engaging and motivating class.

As that year went on, he apparently recognized my modest talent at arithmetic and basic algebra. At the end of that year, the school system offered an opportunity for some of us to take “advanced” junior high school math and pre-algebra.

Mr. Dumphy put my name forward for this class. I was accepted, along with one other student.

Anyway, the after school advanced course cost $1.25 for the textbook (this was in 1958 dollars – probably $100 today). It’s a fact that my family could not pay that, so I told Mr Dumphy that I couldn’t enroll. He reached into his pocket, gave me $1.25 and said, “Pay me back when you’re a doctor”. I took the class.

Well, I never forgot Mr. Dumphy for that gesture. And I have told that story many times over the past 50+ years, whenever anybody asks about influential people. Ralph Dumphy was a crystal clear example of what a good teacher is and does, and he had a forever impact on so many lives.

I never became a doctor, but I did become a math teacher for many years, and I never forgot Mr. Ralph Dumphy.

Godspeed, Mr. Dumphy. Life well lived. With tears in my eyes, and sympathy to his family.

Condolence: I was so fortunate to have met Ralph when I was teaching Math in Shrewsbury. He was always there when I needed some encouragement or help. He had a great sense of humor. Dick and I send our sympathies to the family.

Condolence: Dear Family,

I had the good fortune of having Mr. Dumphy as my math teacher in the sixth grade at North Shore School. He was my favorite math teacher, because he made math come alive! I later met up with Mr. Dumphy again as a young adult. Ralph and I taught together at Beal School this time, and he was instrumental in helping me learn the ropes during my first year of teaching! As a result, I continued to teach for over 30 years and I still continue to tutor in my retirement years! Ralph was a very special teacher and mentor to me, and I was able to say thank you to him, every time I ran into to him at the grocery store! On the lighter side, I loved it when we had a boring mundane teacher's meeting, Ralph would sometimes turn off his hearing aides and roll his eyes and gave us a wink! I am sure that I do not have to remind any of you as to what an inspiring man he was to so many people!

With sympathy,
Joyce Perreault
