Obituary for Richard E. Lewis

SHREWSBURY- Richard E. Lewis died Friday, February 3, 2017 after a brief illness at age 74.

Richard was born in Medford, MA son of the late Ralph and Irene (O’Leary) Lewis. He was raised in Lunenburg, graduating from St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg. He went on to graduate from UMass Amherst, on a football scholarship. He began his teaching career at Marlboro High School and later held the position of Athletic Director at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden, MA before retiring in 2004.

He will be missed dearly by his wife of 50 years, Johanna (Coyle) Lewis, his loving son, Jeffrey M. Lewis of Newton, his devoted daughter, Darryl L. Vigliatura and her husband James, of Rutland MA, his sisters, Dorothy M. Gowell and her husband David of Exeter, NH and Mary Ellen Marchewka of Fairport, NY, his two adoring grandchildren, Olivia and Jeffrey Vigliatura and many admiring nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brother Ralph Lewis, Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Richard’s family on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. in BRITTON SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral will be Thursday with a Mass celebrated at 11:00 AM in St. Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Please go directly to church. Burial will be held privately in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
