Obituary for Richard J "Doc" Weagle

Richard J "Doc" Weagle
Dr. Richard J. “Doc” Weagle, 75, died unexpectedly on December 31, 2017, at the Beaumont Rehabilitation Facility, after a period of declining health.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, Susan (Bylund) Weagle, two daughters, Michelle Weagle and Valerie Weagle and her husband Daniel Noyes, both of Auburn, two granddaughters, Zoey and Elenora Weagle, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

“Doc” was born in Worcester, the only child of Shirley and James Weagle. He moved to Auburn as a teen and graduated from Auburn High School as a member of the Class of 1961. He attended Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist at Drury Square Pharmacy before enrolling in Georgetown School of Dentistry, graduating in 1970. After graduation from Georgetown, he served in the United States Public Health service, stationed in Miami, Florida, for two years. In 1972, he moved back to his hometown of Auburn and built his own dental practice, originally operating out of his family home. He eventually moved his practice to 123 Central Street, where he remained in practice until his retirement from dentistry in 1999 due to persistent work-related back issues. At that time, he changed careers to become Superintendent of the Auburn Water District, having served previously on the board of Water Commissioners for several years. He officially retired from the Water District in 2010 but continued to offer his services there until the time of his death.

Doc was an avid supporter of the town of Auburn and a man of many hobbies and interests. He was a Past President of the Auburn Rotary Club and a member of the Auburn Sportsman’s Club. Over the years in his spare time, he enjoyed woodcarving, ice fishing, fly-tying, birdwatching and banding, carpentry, and wood-turning. He spent many happy hours in his workshop creating handmade gifts for family and friends. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, and an avid supporter of his daughters’ and granddaughters’ activities. He completed the newspaper crossword puzzle daily and retained his intellect and sharp wit until his passing. He was, at heart, a family man, a community supporter, and a generous soul.

Friends and family are invited to visit with Doc’s family on Thursday January 4, 2018 from 4-7 pm in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. A memorial service celebrating Doc’s life will be on Friday January 5, 2018 at 11:00 am in Pakachoag Church, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn. Burial will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Auburn Fire & Rescue, 47 Auburn Street, Auburn, MA 01501.
