Alfred M.  St.Onge
Alfred M. St. Onge, 88, of Shrewsbury, a retired Captain of the Shrewsbury Fire Department died peacefully on Wednesday January 17, 2018 in the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke after an illness.

Alfred was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Ernest and Anne (Monahan) St. Onge. He graduated from North High School. Alfred met and married Theresa M. Schiavone in 1950 and spent the next 66 years with the love of his life until she passed in 2016.

In 1952, Alfred enlisted in the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict and was later honorable discharged to serve in the Army Reserves for the next eight years. In 1957, he was sworn in as a member of the Shrewsbury Fire Department. For the next 28 years, he proudly served the Town of Shrewsbury before retiring as a Captain in 1985.

In his retirement years, Alfred and his wife Theresa enjoyed traveling, especially to Kennebunkport, Maine, Florida and Aruba. He also was passionate about refereeing college and high school sports, which included football, girls basketball, soccer, field hockey, baseball, softball and girls lacrosse. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame- New England Chapter, Class of 2000.

He leaves his daughter Cheryl A. St. Onge of West Dennis; his son Barry J. St. Onge of Shrewsbury; and a grandson, Barry J. St. Onge Jr. of Derry, New Hampshire. Besides his wife, he is predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Alfred’s family on Monday, January 22, 2018 from 9:30-10:30 am in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main St, Shrewsbury followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 am in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Burial with military honors will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alfred’s name to: McAuley Nazareth Home for Boys Inc., 77 Mulberry Street, Leicester, MA 01524.
