Obituary for Robert F. "Bobby" Zona

SHREWSBURY- Robert F. “Bobby” Zona, 60, lifelong resident of Shrewsbury, died Wednesday, November 23, 2011 after a short illness.

In 2009, Bobby lost his best friend and devoted wife of 13 years, Mary McInerney-Zona. He leaves two adoring children; Dillon J. and Keeley M. Zona; his loving parents, John and Florence (Seaver) Zona of Shrewsbury; sister-in-law, Karen Zona and her children, John and Matthew; also survived by his father and mother-in- law, John and Bridget (McCarthy) McInerney of Worcester; brother-in-law, Sean McInerney of Worcester, sisters-in-law, Ann McInerney of West Boylston and Clare Gentilucci and her husband, Steve of Worcester; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. He was predeceased by his only brother, John A. Zona.

He was born in Worcester, and raised in Shrewsbury. Bobby graduated from Shrewsbury High School, where he excelled in sports, including Baseball, Basketball and Football. Bobby’s outstanding athletic accomplishments led to his induction as a charter member of the Shrewsbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Bobby worked for the Town of Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation Department for 40 years, retiring just this past summer.

Bobby cherished his time with his family and friends, especially when he was entertaining them at his home, known as ” Easy Street” or the “Rosedale Cafe” , a place where everyone was made comfortable and welcome. As an avid sports fan, he enjoyed cheering on all of the New England Sports Teams.

Bobby enjoyed attending sporting events, Irish step-dancing festivals, and vacations to the beach. He was a fun-loving family man, who many were fortunate to call a friend.


Friends and relatives are invited to visit with Bobby’s family on Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 2-6 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Bobby’s funeral will be held on Monday, November 28, 2011 from the funeral home with a funeral Mass celebrating his life at 10 AM in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
