Obituary for John M Hayes Sr.

John M. Hayes Sr., 83, lifelong resident of Shrewsbury, died Friday, May 20, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

John was born and raised in Shrewsbury son of the late Patrick J. Hayes and Delia (Cocoran) Hayes. John married the love of his life Barbara (Dellassandro) Hayes they spent 52 years together raising their family before Barbara died in 2011.

John is survived by his children Sharon Grasso and her husband, David of Worcester, Brenda Callahan and her husband Alan of Milford, John Hayes, Jr., and his wife Kelly of Chelmsford and Robin Hayes of Shrewsbury; nine grandchildren, Angela and her husband, Jason, David Jr., Jeremy, Brian and his wife Loida, Steven and his wife Jocelyn, Sean, Matthew, Zachary and Eric; three great grandchildren Madyson, Avery and Joshua; also survived by his siblings, Margaret and her husband Robert, Rita, William, Daniel and George and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Patrick J. Jr., and Edmond and five sisters, Mary P, Margaret, Theresa, Eileen and Patricia.

He had worked for 61 years as a chef in Morgan Hall and later at Goat Head Restaurant on the WPI Campus in Worcester. He retired for a short time then found himself back at work doing what he enjoyed most. At the age of 82 his words “Let see, maybe one more year”. John had just retired one month before his passing at the age of 83.

John served his country proudly with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He enjoyed his visits to the Foxwood Casino, playing the lottery and his daily run to Dunkin Donuts for his morning coffee. He cherished the family cookouts by the pool with his children and grandchildren.

The Hayes family wishes to thank the staff of VNA Network and the Rose Monahan Hospice Residence for the compassionate care that was given to John during his last weeks.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from 6-8 PM in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. A prayer service will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 11 AM in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
