Obituary for Michael Anthony "Mike" Finizza Sr.

SHREWSBURY - Michael A. “Mike” Finizza, Sr., 90, of Shrewsbury formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, after a brief illness on Sunday June 5, 2016.

He is survived by his son Mike A. Finizza Jr., and his wife Donna, a son-in-law Thomas Senior and his close friend Linda Daly; four wonderful grandchildren, Gina Marie (Senior) Kelly and her husband Gary, of Shrewsbury, Michael Finizza III and his wife Heidi, of Charlton, Shawn Senior and his wife Kimberly, of Shrewsbury and Todd Finizza and his wife Kelly from Oxford; eight cherished great grandchildren, Patrick and Kylian Kelly and Thomas and Andrew Senior all of Shrewsbury, Zachary and Cole Finizza Of Oxford, and Sofia and Evan Finizza of Charlton. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews spread out from the East to West coast with one very close niece remaining in Worcester, Agnes (Finizza) Jandrow.

Mike was the son of the late Felix and Agnes (Dota) Finizza. He was predeceased by his by his wife Marie (Manzelli) Finizza in 2007 and his daughter Linda (Finizza) Senior in 2000; also two brothers Joseph and Frank Finizza and sister Libra (Finizza) Perron.

At the age of 17, Mike enlisted into the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the USS Tolland, supporting the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The USS Tolland was selected to escort the USS Missouri into Tokyo Bay to Yokahama, Japan to witness the signing of the peace treaty on Sept. 2, 1945.

Mike worked for Pullman Standard until they closed. He was a bricklayer for over 20 years and retired in 1991, from Neles-Jamesbury now known as Metso Corp. in Shrewsbury.

Mike was a fan of all sports. He was part of the original team that built the Joe Schwartz, little league field and was the first grounds keeper after the completion of the field. He coached Bay State Paint to three league championships. Mike also coached Modified Fast Pitch softball for many years, winning the state championship in 1972. Mike loved watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren play all sports, most recently, Patrick and Kylian Kelly for Shrewsbury High School.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mike’s family on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 9:30-10:30 AM in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM in Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Saint John Cemetery, Worcester.
