I knew John during the latter part of his life. I played many enjoyable rounds of golf with him at the Westborough Country Club during the Wednesday morning senior golf outings. It was there that I was sad to read of his passing from his obituary that someone had thoughtfully posted in the pro shop. Us golfers tend to be rather unhappy when we miss a shot. John played the game well, but I always will remember the short, almost like a cackle, laugh he would let out when he hit an errant shot
John and I also shared an interest in genealogy often discussing it on the course and we sometimes met in Shrewsbury at informal genealogy club that George Brown ran out of the library. I still remember our conversations about efforts to find some of his elusive Frenc-Canadian ancestors.
John and I were also both democrats which made us a distinct minority among our golfing buddies, and we frequently talked politics on the course; something I greatly miss.
I think his wife had already passed when I first met John but he frequently spoke of his three daughters. Although I did not know any of you it was clear to me that he loved and admired all of you greatly. He was not only a gentleman, kind and considerate of others, but fun to be arround. He gave up golf over the last 4 or 5 years so we lost contact. I miss him an will miss him even more now that he is gone. Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your father, a man I liked and admire.
Sincerely,
Gibbs Mitchell
