Obituary for Serge F. Hummon

Serge F. Hummon
Serge Floyd Hummon, age 99, died in his sleep on December 29, 2016, in Holden, Massachusetts. He was born in Ochiltree county Texas, the son of Floyd and Goldie Amstutz Hummon. Raised on farms in Michigan and Ohio, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1939, and he completed his graduate education at Union Seminary in New York and Chicago Theological Seminary.

Ordained in 1945 as a Congregational Christian minister, Serge served rural churches in Michigan and Wisconsin before joining the Congregational Conference staff in Wisconsin. For most of his career, he worked nationally for the United Church of Christ's Board for Homeland Ministries, where he was well know for specializing in the rural church and ministry to Native American communities. Outgoing and democratic, Serge engaged people from all backgrounds, and he was cherished for his warmth, good sense, and love of humanity. After retiring, he and his beloved wife, Doris, moved to Peacham, Vermont, a community they loved for its natural beauty and generous people. In leisure moments, he enjoyed photography, canoeing, and working on the house, gardens, and yard.

He leaves his son, David; his daughters-in-law, Kathleen and Mary; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Doris Taylor Hummon, and his son, Norman Hummon.

A memorial service will be held at Follen Community Church, Lexington, Massachusetts on Saturday, January 7th, at 2 PM, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UCC Annual Fund (ucc.org).
