Obituary for Claire M. Sundstrom

Claire M. Sundstrom
SHREWSBURY- Claire M. (Nelson) Sundstrom, 87, of Shrewsbury died Sunday, January 8, 2017 in her home after a long illness.

Her husband Carl W. Sundstrom died in 2004. She leaves two sons; James M. Sundstrom and his wife Joan of Auburn and John D. Sundstrom of Auburn, three grandchildren; Emily C. Sundstrom and her husband Jeremiah Niez of Mission Viejo, CA, Luke R. Sundstrom of Auburn and Rachel M. Sundstrom of Costa Mesa, CA and a great-granddaughter Lorelei Niez.

Mrs. Sundstrom was born in Worcester, daughter of Bror O. and Mary A. (Olson) Nelson. She lived in Worcester and graduated from South High School in 1947. After marrying and starting her family, she and Carl moved to Shrewsbury in 1955. She was a secretary for the Shrewsbury School department for many years before retiring from her last position as secretary to the principal at Shrewsbury High School.

Throughout her life, Claire was an active member of St. Anne’s Parish in Shrewsbury. Her loves included reading, dancing and playing the piano. She was a diehard sports fan beginning with Holy Cross teams in the 40’s and 50’s and always the Red Sox. One of the highlights of her honeymoon was a trip to a Red Sox doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Claire cherished her time spent with her family and friends. She always brought a sense of humor, wit and fun to any gathering.

Early in their marriage Claire and Carl visited Cape Cod for the first time, beginning a lifelong love of the Cape and Dennisport in particular. The house they owned there for 25 years provided the background for many of their children’s and grandchildren’s fondest memories of time spent with them.

We want to especially thank the management, caregivers and nurses at Benchmark Shrewsbury Crossings in Shrewsbury. During the more than three years Claire resided there she was loved and cared for and cherished by all. There are no words to convey our eternal thanks for their devotion. We always knew Claire was in a safe and loving place.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Claire’s family on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 PM in BRITTON SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury.
