Obituary for Reverend Edward J. Moran

Reverend Edward J. Moran, Retired priest with the Diocese of Worcester died Saturday February 4, 2017 in Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester. He was 81 years old.

Edward Joseph Moran was born in Worcester, October 7, 1935, son of the late Edward and Mae (Fleming) Moran. Due to his father’s employment, the family moved to Hudson, New York and Newton, Massachusetts.

In 1943, the family returned to Worcester. Father Moran attended Blessed Sacrament School, St. John’s High School and the College of the Holy Cross where he graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Father was assigned by Bishop Wright to St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA.

Fr. Moran was ordained to the priesthood in Saint Paul's Cathedral by Bishop Bernard J. Flanagan on February 3, 1962. His first assignments were St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson and St. Bernard’s Parish in Fitchburg.

Bishop Flanagan sent Fr. Moran to Loyola University in Chicago where he earned an advanced degree in Religious Studies. Fr. Moran ministered at St. Anthony’s Church in Dudley, St. Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester and St. Mary’s Parish in Shrewsbury.

In 1979, Father was named Pastor of St. Boniface Parish in Lunenburg. During his years at St. Boniface Father renovated the church and built the parish center. On June 30 1989, Father was named Pastor of St. Anne’s Parish in Shrewsbury where he served the parish and the community until his retirement on June 28, 2009.

Father Moran had served on the diocesan Religious Education Board, the Liturgy Committee and the Presbyteral Council.

Father Moran leaves behind a brother, Donald Moran and his wife Mary of Worcester; two nephews Brendan and his wife Amanda, Terrance and his wife Blair; two nieces, Erin and her husband Mark and Kara; seven grand nieces, Caissie, Morgan, Lauren, McKenzie, Kailyn, Hadley and Aislyn.


Fr. Moran will lie in honor on Friday morning, February 10, 2017 from 9:30-11:00 AM at Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. His funeral Mass will follow and will be celebrated at 11:00 am in Saint Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury where the Most Reverend Bishop Robert J, McManus, Bishop of Worcester will be the Principal Celebrant. Burial will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery, Worcester. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Clergy Benefit Fund, C/O St. George's Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
