Obituary for Eliane H O'Brien (McCarthy)

Eliane H  O'Brien (McCarthy)
Eliane H. (McCarthy) O’Brien, 97, of the Southgate Community in Shrewsbury, formerly of Auburn, Milton and Quincy died Tuesday May 23, 2017 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

Eliane was born in Paris, France daughter of the late Michael and Maria A. (Fabre) McCarthy. She graduated from Ascension High School in 1938. Eliane continued her education at the Nursing School of Peter Bent Brigham in Boston from 1939 to 1942 graduating with a R.N. degree. Eliane began her nursing career as an operating room supervisor and instructor of operating room technique at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital in Rhode Island from 1942 until 1943.

World War II was going on and there was a great need for nurses; So, in 1943, Eliane joined the United States Navy. She was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Alban, NY, the U.S. Naval Dispensary in Davisville, RI, where she met the love of her life, George F. O’Brien, and the U.S. Naval Hospital in Chelsea, MA. She was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. After leaving the Navy she worked at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth as an operating room supervisor.

In 1947, she married George F. O’Brien and resided in Quincy, MA where they raised their children and later moved to Milton in 1965. Eliane returned back to the work force in 1968 after her husband had passed and became a school nurse in the Milton Public Schools retiring in 1984 as the Senior Nurse. In 1996, she moved to the Worcester County area to be closer to family and resided in Auburn until 2008 when Eliane made her final move to the Southgate Community in Shrewsbury.

Eliane had many interests including knitting, bridge, line dancing and water aerobics. But her greatest enjoyment was her family. She loved family gatherings and was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her siblings.

Her husband, George F. O’Brien died in 1967. She leaves her children, Christopher J. O’Brien of Canton, Paul J. O’Brien and his wife Elizabeth Getchell O’Brien of East Falmouth, Elaine O’Brien Tinlin of East Falmouth, David M. O’Brien and his wife Valerie of Portland, OR and George F. O’Brien and his wife Jane of Marlborough; a brother, Maurice J. McCarthy and his wife Barbara of Auburn; six grandchildren, Sean of Marlborough, Katie of New York, Tierney of Dudley, Conor of East Falmouth, James and Patrick of Portland, OR; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Eliane was predeceased by a granddaughter, Elise; nine siblings, Robert, Michael, Jean, Roger, Richard, Paul, Mary, Arlene, Francis; and a son-in-law, Robert T. Tinlin.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Eliane’s family on Tuesday May 30, 2017 from 3-6 pm in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street Shrewsbury. Her funeral will be on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 with a funeral Mass celebrated at 10 am in Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be private in Milton Cemetery, Milton, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Health Care, 555 Plantation St, Worcester, MA 01605.
