Obituary for Jacinto "Jack" Arroyo
Jacinto “Jack” Arroyo, 75, a retired Worcester Firefighter passed away on Sunday December 17, 2017 in his home with his loving family by his side.
Jack was born and raised in Cayey, Puerto Rico, one of eight children of the late Higinio and Candida (Vega) Arroyo.
He joined the Worcester Fire Department as the first Puerto Rican firefighter and worked for the Department for over 20 years with Ladder 4 in the Webster Square Firehouse. He was involved in the Affirmative Action team for the department for several years.
He was very proud of his heritage and was involved in establishing the memorial honoring the “Borinqueneers” of the Korean War at the Korean War Monument in Worcester. He also was an original member and part of the startup of Centro Las Americas in Worcester.
Jack lived a rewarding and fulfilling life; he was a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather.
He enjoyed life to fullest. He and his wife traveled near and far; he enjoyed music, camping, gardening, fishing, and cooking Spanish dishes for his family. One of his favorite moments was meeting and talking to Big Papi on the Fenway field during batting practice, before a Red Sox game.
He leaves behind his wife and soulmate, of 52 years, Jane M. (Michalak) Arroyo; his three loving daughters, Tina Balesano and her husband Peter of Auburn, Wendy Stearns and her fiancé Rich Suitum of Sturbridge and Sandra Arroyo of Worcester; four wonderful grandchildren, Amanda Balesano and Lisa Balesano, Danielle Stearns and Corey Stearns; one great granddaughter Elizabeth Stearns; six siblings, Flora, Felicita, Francisco, Susana, Edwin and Lucy; also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Maria Louisa.
Jack’s family wishes to send their gratitude to Dr. O’Shea and all the nurses at Eaton Place especially Leigh and to the Jewish Healthcare Hospice Nurse Jen and HCA Joanie.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jack’s family on Thursday December 21, 2017 from 4-7 pm in the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral will be on Friday, December 22, 2017 with a funeral Mass celebrated at 11:00 am in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. Memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army, 640 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
