Obituary for Eleanor M. Prentice

Eleanor M. (Orton) Prentice of Shrewsbury passed away April 19, 2018. Her husband of 70 years, Clifford F. Prentice, pre-deceased her seven months earlier. She is survived by three children David A. Prentice of Hamilton, NJ; Gary R. Prentice and his wife Lynn of Ballston Lake, NY; and Susan A. Bryer and husband Mark of Livingston, TX. She is also survived by three grandchildren Joshua D. Prentice of Paducah, KY; Julie M. Bryer of Raleigh, NC and Amy L. Bryer also of Raleigh.

She was born in Bridgeport, CT, the daughter of Elmer F. and Olive (Green) Orton. She was raised in Stratford, CT and graduated from Stratford High School. She attended Butler Business School and then worked at A. W. Burritt Lumber Company. She was married in the Congregational Church in Stratford.

Mrs. Prentice was married to a career Naval Officer and lived in Yorktown, VA; Monterey, CA; Norfolk, VA; Newport, RI; Yokosuka, Japan; San Diego, CA and Andover, MA prior to moving to Shrewsbury in 1971.

She lived in Yokosuka, Japan during the Vietnam Conflict serving as a Gray Lady at the Naval Hospital. She especially enjoyed writing letters home for the wounded servicemen and shopping for them. She was also active in the Officer’s Wives Club, serving as hospitality chairperson. While in Japan she taught English conversation to executives of a major Japanese Corporation.

While Residing in Shrewsbury, Mrs. Prentice was a volunteer at the Memorial Hospital and taught Sunday school at the First Congregational Church. She was a former member of the Worcester Country Club and the Shrewsbury Women’s Club.

Relative and friends are invited to visit with Eleanor Prentice's family on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 1:00-2:00 PM in the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. A memorial service will follow. Memorial contribution may be made to the First Congregational Church, 19 Church Road, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
