Obituary for Robert Preston Mersereau

Robert Preston Mersereau of Shrewsbury. After considerable effort, his little body succumbed to the ravages of cancer, and he passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on July 28, 2018.

He graduated with honors from Hamilton High School in 1961 and Salem State University, Dean’s List, in 1971 with a BS in Math/Science Secondary Education.

Robert was fond of saying he lived a wonderful life with adventure and success. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Marie Celia Mersereau, two adult children, Michelle Mersereau Farber and Robert Anthony Mersereau and their spouses, Saul Farber, and Stefanie Bui, and two grandchildren, Maxwell Robert and June Marelu Farber, a brother, Richard Mersereau of Brunswick Maine and his wife Bette Spettel and his nephew, Kyle, and niece Ellie.

He worked as an all-around machinist for General Electric, a radioman in the US Navy from 1966 to 1968 and a rotating parts machinist for GE in 1966 and 1967. He taught at Lincoln Junior High School in Medford, Ma from 1971 to 1972. He then was a statistician in the insurance industry until 1984.

From 1984 thru 2003 he was the owner and operator of The Monogram Shoppe in Fitchburg and Leominster, MA.

In 2003 until 2018, he pursued his real love – volunteering as a Citizen Teacher for Citizen School, teaching second graders at Tower Hill Botanical Gardens, and judging Science Fairs.

He was a member of the Aldrich Astronomical Society since 2001.

His family will be holding a private interment at Hamilton Cemetery in Hamilton, Massachusetts. There will be a Celebration of his life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Citizen Schools, a nonprofit that loved him as much as he loved his students. Donations can be sent to Citizen Schools, 308 Congress Street, Boston, MA 02210.
