Obituary for Thomas E. Conroy Jr.

Thomas E. Conroy Jr.
Thomas E. Conroy, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at UMass/Memorial Medical Center from congestive heart failure. He was the husband of Judith A. [Lucier] Conroy with whom he shared 52 wonderful years of marriage.

Tom was born in Worcester on May 13, 1938, to the late Thomas E. Conroy, Sr. and Josephine M. [Dubsky]. He graduated St. John’s High School in 1956, earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1963, he studied for a summer at the Université de Laval (Quebec, P.C.), and an MEd from Worcester State University in 1987. After high school Tom served as a United States Marine.

He began working at age 12 in various businesses owned by his father, and later was a professional photographer, however, Tom dedicated his life to education. He started teaching in the Berkshires at Lee Academy and continued for 37 years in Worcester Public Schools teaching French, Latin, Spanish, and photography at Providence Street Junior High, South High Community School, and Doherty Memorial High School. He also taught languages and photography in Worcester’s Adult Education programs for many years.

He will be remembered for his intelligence, devotion to family, dedication to students, sense of humor and ability to never take himself too seriously.

Tom is survived by his son Thomas and wife, Robyn; daughter Kelly Conroy and Mark McCue of Cherry Valley; and daughter Christine McKeon and husband, Timothy. He also leaves five grandchildren, Thomas and Evelyn Conroy; and Gabrielle, Timothy, and Alyson McKeon; a brother, Daniel Conroy and wife Elaine, of St. Louis MO; brothers-in-law Richard Lucier of Sarasota FL and James Lucier and wife Celeste of Seffner FL; and Stephen Dupskey, Jr. and wife Donna. He will be fondly remembered by his large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws as well as friends and former students. Tom was predeceased by his sister, Mary Beth Mannila.

The family wishes to thank UMass/Memorial Cardiology, the 3-Lakeside Step-Down Unit staff, and particularly Dr. Theo Meyer and Maggie Cabral, N.P. for their care and compassion.

Family and friends are invited to honor, remember, and celebrate Tom’s life between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn, MA. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 5 at 10:00 AM at Saint Peter’s Church, 931 Main Street, Worcester. All are asked to meet the family at the church. Burial will be held in private at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Thomas E. Jr. ('87) and Judith A. ('91) Conroy, Study Abroad Scholarship at Worcester State University. Memorial gifts should be made payable to the Worcester State Foundation and sent to University Advancement, Worcester State University, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester MA 01602.
