Obituary for Evelyn J Eresian (Demurjian)

Evelyn J Eresian (Demurjian)
Evelyn J. (Demurjian) Eresian, of Shrewsbury, 93, died after a brief illness on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus with her family at her side. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of the late George Demurjian, an Armenian immigrant orphaned as a result of the Armenian Genocide, and Eva (Bedrosian) Demurjian, of Worcester. Her beloved sister Marion D. Aharonian predeceased her in February, 2017.

Evelyn was the loving wife of the late Ara Eresian, Sr. for 57 years until his death in October, 2007 and the mother of son Ara, Jr. and daughters Melanie and Eva Marie, all of Shrewsbury. Her children meant everything to her.

Evelyn owned her own business, an accomplishment for a woman ahead of her time. She was a real estate title examiner with Hobbs Abstract Company for sixty-six years, and an owner of the company for forty years along with her sister, Marion. The sisters purchased Hobbs Abstract Company, established in 1870 and being the oldest title company in Worcester County, after working for many years with Howard Hobbs, the son of the founder of the company, Horace Hobbs. Evelyn loved taking care of her clients, many of whom she considered dear friends. At various times, her children were all privileged to work with Evelyn and their aunt in the business, which continues to this day. Evelyn was always ready to help anyone who came to her desk at the old Worcester County Courthouse – and a good deal of Worcester County and beyond came to Evelyn’s desk. In the 1950’s in the aftermath of a catastrophic flooding of Cady Brook in South County, Evelyn did all the title work for the municipalities and affected parties for no charge. She also loved to help people who came to her, making connections with those who in turn could help them. Many careers started or were enhanced by Evelyn picking up the phone or reaching out to a client about a promising legal mind or a person in need.

Growing up at Lake Quinsigamond off of Sunderland Road in Worcester, Evelyn became a strong swimmer and diver. She was the only girl to dive off the 20 foot board and once swam from her part of the Lake across to the other. She had also loved to ride horseback, to bowl and to play tennis. Evelyn enjoyed family vacations spent at Maine and Bermuda where she made many friends. She had an especially meaningful trip to Italy with her husband and Eva Marie that included a spiritual visit to the Vatican. Evelyn loved wildflowers of all variety and animals of all kinds, especially dogs and cats of which she had many throughout the course of her life. She sang in the Worcester Chorus for many years. Evelyn had donated time to her church along with her mother and sister in the Women’s Guild and Daughters of Vartan. Along with her husband, Evelyn was a part of the process of the church moving from Laurel Street to its present location at Salisbury and Dean Streets, doing and donating the title work for the church. She also donated trees in Israel, supported programs for the blind through her husband’s volunteer work for Audio Journal, donated books in memoriam to the Worcester Law Library and created an Armenian education endowment along with her sister.

Evelyn will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Evelyn’s family beginning at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA. Her Funeral Service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Burial will be held in private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Armenian Church of Our Saviour.
