Obituary for Steven D Turcotte

Steven D Turcotte
Steven D. Turcotte, 59, passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester on Tuesday, January 29, with his loving family by his side.

Steven was born in Auburn, MA on August 17, 1959 to the late Raymond J. and Phyllis D. (Spillane) Turcotte. He attended the Mercy Centre for Developmental Disabilities from age four to age fifty-eight, “retiring” only after a hip fracture in August 2018.

Steven was a faithful community member. He held several different jobs throughout his life and remained a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Auburn, MA his entire life. At The Mercy Centre School for Exceptional Children, Steven was an assistant custodian to “Mr. C” who he worked closely with for many years. Steven also held positions at McDonald’s in West Boylston, the Ramada Inn in Auburn, and Holy Cross College as a kitchen custodial assistant and dishwasher. At St. Joseph’s, he would attend Mass faithfully with his family and, as a Eucharist minister, would even have longer communion lines than the priest!

Recognition by the City of Worcester, Governor of Massachusetts and other state officials along with several commendations for his hard work and dedication through the years were also honors bestowed upon Steven. Steven was also a fierce competitor and avid sports fan. Some of Steven’s best memories and biggest accomplishments included playing pick-up basketball with his brothers and participating in hundreds of Special Olympics competitions. He earned over 35 gold, silver, and bronze medals and was even recognized as the Most Inspirational Athlete of the Year in 1987.

As a fan, the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, New England Patriots and Boston Celtics were always on the television. Steven announced every call even before the referee/umpires could make the call themselves and when the box scores were reported the next day in the Telegram, they were always carefully analyzed by Steven for accuracy.

The most important aspect of Steven’s life, however, was his family. He resided with his parents until he was no longer able to help care for them in 2008. His father passed away in 2003 and his mother in 2010. He then went to live with his brother Robert and family in Oxford. He attended and was a big part of every family wedding, anniversary, and birthday party. He served as Godfather to his niece Justine and then later to Justine’s son, Connor.

He cherished the time spent with his family and especially loved to vacation with them at their “camp” in Surry, Maine. Steven enjoyed the campfires, swimming, meals, fishing, baths in the lake, and sunset boat rides in the pontoon boat. Steven also took many trips to visit his sister in Florida and even traveled to the Caribbean for a family vacation.

No matter who you were, Steven always had a huge hug and a smile for you – and especially for the women, the hug would be extra-long and include a kiss. Steven lit up the room. There was never a meal eaten without Steven’s “Grace” bestowed upon it. Oftentimes Steven was referred to as the “Mayor” of wherever he happened to be at the time. Steven’s family was always so proud of him.

The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Centre for the many years of providing Steven with such a strong life foundation. To the amazing staff at Care One in Millbury, words cannot express our gratitude for the wonderful care and attention that Steven received over these past six months. We are also truly appreciative of the staff in the Intensive Care Unit for helping to make his exit from this life a very peaceful one.

In addition to his late parents, Steven leaves behind five siblings. The late Raymond R. Turcotte and his wife Jane from Hubbardston, Janet Paquette and her husband Francis J. Paquette from Florida; Joyce A. Looney and her husband, the late Daniel P. Looney of Auburn, Robert K. Turcotte his wife Donna of Oxford; and Kevin M. Turcotte from Indiana. He also leaves behind twelve nieces and nephews: David, Danielle, Christina, Timothy, Kathleen, Patricia, Kelly, Colleen, Julian, Justine, Paige and Emma; along with many great-nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Steven’s family on Monday, February 4, 2019 from 4-7 pm in the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central St., Auburn. His funeral will be on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 with a funeral Mass celebrated at 10 am at Saint Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Street North, Auburn. Steven will be buried with his parents in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in loving memory of Steven to Mercy Centre – Adult Services, 25 Westchester St., Worcester, MA 01606.
