Obituary for William C. "Bill" Robbie Sr.

William C. "Bill" Robbie Sr.
William C. “Bill” Robbie Sr., 92, of Charlton and former longtime Auburn resident, died on Saturday September 28, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Born and raised in Worcester, Bill was the son of George C. W. and Bridget (Manning) Robbie. Bill graduated from high school and, shortly after, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for almost two years – earning a World War II Victory Medal during that period. Upon his return, he attended college, first achieving his Associates, then Bachelor’s Degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Bill worked as project manager for the Anderson Corporation, overseeing the installation of windows and doors, then went on to work security for the Telegram & Gazette.

While working at the Telegram & Gazette in the 1980’s, Bill met the love of his life, the late Mary E. McCarthy, who had been working as a copy editor at the time. The two were married and shared the next 32 years together, until her death in 2018.

He loved spending time at his family’s summer home in New Harbor, ME, where fond memories were made. Bill was a longtime treasurer of the Auburn Hockey Association and was also past Master of the Joel H. Prouty Masonic Lodge in Auburn.

Bill is survived by his children, Diane L. Maddern of Auburn, Wayne A. Robbie and his wife Judith of New Mexico, and Douglas S. Robbie and his wife Cheryl of Florida; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and the McCarthy family. In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was predeceased by his son, the late William C. Robbie, Jr., and his four sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill’s family on Wednesday October 2, 2019 between 9:30 and 10:30 AM at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church - St. Catherine of Sweden Parish, 600 Cambridge Street, Worcester, MA. Burial with military honors will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
