Obituary for Paul J. O'Brien

Paul J. O’Brien, age 67, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2020 from end stage Alzheimer’s and Primary Progressive Aphasia. He was lovingly cared for at the end by his family and the staff at Bridges in Mashpee, where he lived for the last few months of his life.

Paul spent his early years in Quincy, MA, then Milton, MA. Most of Paul’s adult life was spent in Auburn, MA, retiring to East Falmouth, MA and Port Charlotte, FL five years ago. Paul graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School, Clark University, and Suffolk Law School. He ran a law practice in Auburn, MA for over 37 years, serving on many town boards and community service clubs throughout his career. He was active for many years in Kiwanis and a leader in the Boy Scouts.

Paul leaves his wife, Elizabeth Getchell O’Brien, their children, Conor O’Brien of East Falmouth, MA, Tierney O’Brien of Webster, MA, and Katie O’Brien of Jacksonville, FL. His daughter, Elise O’Brien, predeceased him. He is predeceased by his parents, George O’Brien and wife Eliane. He is survived by his siblings, Christopher O’Brien of Hingham, MA, David O’Brien and wife Valerie of Portland, OR, Elaine O’Brien Tinlin of East Falmouth, MA, George O’Brien and wife Jane of Marlboro, and nephews Patrick O’Brien, James O’Brien and Sean O’Brien. He is also survived by his uncle, Maurice McCarthy and wife Barbara, and many loving cousins.

Paul enjoyed time with his family and many friends. He never forgot a friend and kept in touch over the years with childhood, school, neighborhood, and all other friends he made over the years. They truly were part of Paul’s family, as were his youngest children’s birth families. Paul loved being outdoors. His favorite activities included sailing, bicycling, hiking, camping, and swimming. He took great pleasure in listening to all types of music (especially Irish), cooking, history, and reading. He was an avid Red Sox fan.

We want to thank the staff at Bridges in Mashpee for supporting Paul and his family in his last days. And a special thanks to everyone at Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, who assisted us for the last few years through support groups, friendships, counseling, and advice at every step of the dementia journey.
