Obituary for Philip J. Powers

Philip J. Powers, 82, longtime Shrewsbury resident, died peacefully on Monday February 3, 2020 surrounded by his family at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester.

Phil was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late John J. and Mary (Joyce) Powers. He was a 1956 graduate of St. Stephen’s High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country for several years before his honorable discharge. Philip worked for A&P Grocery Stores for thirteen years, before moving on to work for the United States Postal Service, where he dedicated thirty-two years of his career, before retiring.

Philip was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division #36 of Worcester, and the First Friday Club, also in Worcester. Philip was a Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Immaculate Conception Church of Worcester.

Philip is survived by his six nephews, Kevin, John, Michael, James, Thomas, and Joseph Powers; two nieces, Mary Cleary and Christine Lemoine; fifteen grandnieces and grandnephews; and sister-in-law, Anne “Nancy” Powers of Worcester. In addition to his parents, Philip was predeceased by his brothers, John F. Powers and Paul J. Powers; his sister-in-law, Thelma M. (Torsian) Powers; his nephew, Paul J. Powers, Jr; and his grandnephew, James A. Powers.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Philip’s family between 9:00-10:00 am on Monday February 10, 2020 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury followed by a procession to Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St., Worcester where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Food for the Poor Program at St. John's Church, 44 Temple St., Worcester, MA 01604.
