Obituary for Elizabeth A. Greene (Army)
Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Army) Greene, longtime Shrewsbury resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at her home with her family at her side.
She leaves her daughter, Mary E. Greene-Carlin and her husband, James F. Carlin, of Shrewsbury, with whom she lived, as well as her two grandchildren, Robert S. Jones and Molly E. Jones; her niece, Helen Hawes, of New York; her nephews, Ronald Army and his wife, Susan, of Connecticut, and Robert Army and his wife, Monique, of Vermont; as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband of 51 years, Robert W. “Bob” Greene; her parents, Frederick and Elizabeth (Bowman) Army; her sisters, Doris Powers and Ethel McGrath; her brothers, Thomas Army and Chester Army; her brothers-in-law, James McGrath, Sr. and Ed Powers; her mother and father-in-law, Mary (Wilson) Greene and Benjamin Greene.
Betty was raised in Millbury, the youngest of five children. She graduated from Millbury High School, prior to attending Worcester State Teacher’s College – where she met her beloved Bob. They were married in August of 1956, and settled in Shrewsbury to raise their daughter.
She taught at Dorothy Manor in Millbury and St. Mary’s School in Shrewsbury. Betty loved being an educator and eventually retired from teaching in 1995. Betty, Bob, and Mary enjoyed summers on Craigville Beach at their seasonal cottage. She loved her family the most, and Bob and Mary were the light of her life. Betty also enjoyed joining Mary, Jim, and the kids at their camp in Old Orchard Beach, Maine during the last few summers. She loved her lobster rolls and sitting, talking with the neighbors.
Betty’s family would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to the Salmon Hospice Team: Kelly, Brian, Natalia, Karen, and more, whose care and compassion have been outstanding: we cannot thank you enough. Special ‘thank you’ to Cathy LaChance and Robert Brown for their friendship and willingness to help; and Margaret Lorenczykova, for help with Betty during long weeks and weekends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in Betty’s name, to St. Mary’s School, 16 Summer Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, funeral services will be private and by invitation only from the family.
Mary will host a memorial cookout at Betty’s home sometime next summer when COVID is more under control.
