Irene C. (Begin) McCoy, Auburn’s Oldest Citizen, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, at the age of 103.

She was born and raised in Worcester, born to the late Raoul and Bella (Fournier) Begin. Irene was a 1936 graduate of Commerce High School. She met and married the love of her life, the late Harry C. McCoy, and spent the next 68, almost 69 years together. They settled in Auburn to raise their family. Irene was a homemaker when her children were young; later working as the bookkeeper for Artic Refrigeration Equipment, Inc., which was owned and operated by Harry for over 30 years.

Irene was a woman of great faith, being a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Auburn since the 1950’s. She was also an accomplished seamstress who loved fashion. She made a lot of her own clothes and redesigned many that she bought off the rack. Irene and Harry were avid ballroom dancers, which later inspired their only granddaughter to take up competitive ballroom dancing. They also loved to travel and passed on that love to their daughter and granddaughter. Above all, Irene enjoyed spending time with her family and sharing many wonderful memories.

Irene leaves her daughter, Gail N. Holloway and her husband Ronald, of Auburn; her son, Neil K. McCoy, of Vero Beach, FL; her granddaughter, Laurie A. Holloway, of Auburn; her niece, Nancy Mars, of Shrewsbury; and her nephew, Randall Begin, of Oxford. Along with her parents and her husband, Irene was predeceased by her brother, Roland Begin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame Long Term Care (Attn: Development Office, 555 Plantation Street, MA 01605).

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mrs. McCoy’s family between 9:30 and 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn, MA, and at her funeral Mass, which will be celebrated at 11 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Street N., Auburn. Masks and social distancing measures will be required at the funeral home and church. Burial will be held privately.

The Auburn Historical Museum and Society is saddened by the passing of Irene McCoy. She has been the holder of the Boston Post Cane as Auburn's oldest citizen since 2017. She was a delightful lady and we were honored to be a part of her life's story.
