Obituary for Edmund J. Vaitkunas

Edmund J. Vaitkunas, 90, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester, with his loving family by his side.

He leaves his devoted wife of 63 years, Barbara J. (Lazutka) Vaitkunas; their children: Richard Vaitkunas and Jo-Ann Rogers, of Dudley, Patricia “Trish” Pratt and husband Tom, of Clermont, FL, John “Jack” Vaitkunas and wife Pam, of Auburn, Caryn Warren and husband Dana, of Ocala, FL, and Lynn Ruderman and fiancé Scott St. Hillaire, of Worcester; twelve grandchildren: Andrew, Peter, Jennifer, Thomas, Michael, Dale, Tyler and wife Shauni, Joel and wife Kristine, Amanda and husband Stephen, Allison and fiancé Jonathan, Ashley, and Jeffrey; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Edmund was predeceased by two sisters, Isabelle (Vaitkunas) Hober and Ruth (Vaitkunas) Skrip; and their parents, John and Petronella (Aranskas) Vaitkunas.

Born in Worcester, and resident of Auburn since 1966, Edmund was a graduate of Classical High School and attended Becker College. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, Edmund began his career at Melville Shoe Corporation (Thom McAn) and dedicated 36 years before retiring as payroll supervisor. After his early retirement, he worked in many part-time positions, including Harper’s Payroll, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Lundgren Honda Dealership, and officially retired at age 80.

He was a man of great faith and was a longtime parishioner and collector of North American Martyrs Parish in Auburn.

He could be found almost every morning, having his coffee with his McDonald’s group. Edmund often prepared luncheons for residents of Abby’s House in Worcester; he was also an active member of Greendale Men’s Club, serving in different capacities, most recently as the records secretary and membership clerk for 16 years.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Vaitkunas family from 4 – 7 PM on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn, and burial, with military honors, will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
