Obituary for George L. Bergquist

George L. Bergquist, 87, longtime Shrewsbury resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 10, 2022 in the comfort of his home, with his loving family by his side.

He leaves his beloved wife, Florence (LeCour) Bergquist, with whom he recently celebrated 67 years of marriage; his devoted children, Carol King and her husband Steven, of Shrewsbury, Michael Bergquist, of Worcester, and Dennis Bergquist, of Denver, CO; his adoring grandchildren, Kristen Rupolo and her husband Michael, of Shrewsbury, Michelle Parviainen and her husband Seth, of Baldwinville, MA, and Tyler King, of Shrewsbury; his great-grandchildren, Benjamin Bergquist and Natalie Parviainen, both of Baldwinville, MA; his sister, Janet Fenuccio and her husband Bill, of Westborough; his sister-in-law, Mary Lariviere; his niece, Susan Fenuccio, of Harwich; and his nephew, Fred Lariviere, to whom he had become very close towards the end of his life.

George was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Henry and Pauline (Scott) Bergquist. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School, specializing in Printing. At 20 years old, George was drafted into the Army and enjoyed being a Paratrooper, serving his country proudly for two years until his honorable discharge. He married his beloved Florence, and they settled in her hometown of Shrewsbury to begin their family. George was a truck driver for many years, working for Worcester Sand & Gravel in his younger days and retiring from Rand Whitney Group later on.

George loved going to the beach and getting his annual “Swedish Sunburn,” enjoyed skiing and taking his family to New Hampshire in the RV to hit the slopes, golfing, camping, and his yardwork. He was on the National Ski Patrol, was the Assistant Boy Scout Leader in Shrewsbury, and was President of the Shrewsbury National Baseball “Little League.” George also enjoyed volunteering for the Shrewsbury Senior Center and driving for Meals on Wheels, for many years.

He especially enjoyed retirement, and being able to help raise his wonderful grandchildren, whom he loved so much. George will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shrewsbury Senior Center, 98 Maple Avenue, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Bergquist family between 10 and 11 AM on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury, with a service to follow at 11.
