Obituary for Ryan J. VonBehren

Ryan J. “Vonnie” VonBehren, 33, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at UMASS Memorial Medical Center after a long history of liver and kidney failure.

He leaves his devoted father, Dale A. VonBehren and mother, Kathleen (Kennedy) VonBehren; his sister, Megan M. (VonBehren) Kandybowicz (Michael); his niece, Kaia Elise Kandybowicz, whom he adored. He is also survived by his grandfather, Louis VonBehren; aunt Beth Sturm (Steve); and many cousins. Sadly, Ryan was predeceased by his brother, Michael L. VonBehren, who passed in 2008, and his grandmothers, Barbara VonBehren and Betty Kennedy.

Ryan was born in Wilmington, DE and attended elementary school in Delaware and Pennsylvania before moving to Shrewsbury in 1999. He graduated from Shrewsbury High School and went on to attend Rochester Institute of Technology.

Ryan had an affinity for music, and was skilled with his bass guitar. He also loved woodworking, science, and animals, especially his dogs, Charlie and Maggie. Ryan was also known to be a tea aficionado, tried and read about many different varieties.

He fought the good fight, enduring end-stage kidney failure and heart issues, but always strived for health and never missed a dialysis session. He miraculously healed enough to not need a liver transplant. Ryan’s friends Sgt. Anthony Quarta and Rio Wolfe faithfully stood by him during his illness.

Donations in Ryan’s name may be made to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) at https://unos.org/give/#GiveForm (Ryan waited for 2 ½ years on the UNOS list) or to the National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org/donate) who paid for many of Ryan’s treatments.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ryan’s family between 4 – 6 PM on Friday, February 10, 2023 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Service and burial will be held privately for his family.
