Obituary for Robert L. "Bob" Butler

Robert L. “Bob” Butler, 92, of Worcester, and formerly of Auburn for 57 years, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

He leaves his beloved wife of 67 years, Rosemarie A. (D’Ambra) Butler; his loving sons, Robert A. Butler and wife Linda J., of Upton, and David P. Butler and wife Robin K., of Franklin; his cherished grandchildren, Rebecca L. Butler, of Watertown, Megan R. Butler, of Watertown, Ashley Butler Alvarez and husband Jason, of Medford, and Alexandra J. Minard and husband Darwin, of Los Angeles, CA; and a great-grandchild, Lucas B. Alvarez. Bob was predeceased by his siblings, Edna, Dorothy, Rita, John, and Richard.

Bob was born in Warwick, Rhode Island to the late Thomas L. and Henrietta M. (Theroux) Butler, in 1931. He was educated in Rhode Island as well, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy just before the Korean Conflict began. A day after his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob enlisted into the U.S. Air Force, where he served proudly for the next four years. Bob was a Staff Sergeant based in Germany and received National Defense Service and Good Conduct Metals.

Bob married his beloved Rosemarie on November 5, 1955, and they made their home in Worcester. In 1963, they settled in Auburn to raise their family. In his early professional career, Bob enjoyed working for State Mutual Life Assurance Company in Worcester holding various positions from 1974 to 1986. He was Director of Investment Production and Sales, Asst. Secretary of SMA Life Assurance Company, and Vice President of SMA Equities. He received his Master’s degree in Financial Services from American College in 1982, and a second Master’s degree in Management in 1985. Bob became a Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter in 1983, between getting his Master’s. Most recently, he retired in 1992 after working as Senior Vice President of Sales at Phoenix Equity Planning Corp. in Hartford, CT, after six years. Bob was recognized for his accomplishments and was published in Marquis Who’s-Who in America.

In his sparse free time, Bob could be found jogging, playing golf, or swimming. He loved watching sports, enjoying Jazz music, and admiring sports cars.

When he lived in Auburn, Bob was a member of the former Knights of Columbus – Auburn Council #4158, and was an usher of St. Joseph’s Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the Butler family from 5 PM to 7:30 PM on Monday, September 18, 2023 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His prayer service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 19th in the funeral home, with burial and military honors to follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
